⚡ Before You Go — Essentials
🥬 Vegetarian in Hokkaido — Critical Info for Dad
Japanese cooking hides fish in almost everything. Dashi (the base stock in miso soup, ramen, udon, simmered dishes) is made from bonito (dried fish flakes). Miso soup at most restaurants contains dashi. Say: "Watashi wa bejitarian desu. Niku to sakana wa taberaremasen. Tamago wa daijōbu desu" (I'm vegetarian. I can't eat meat or fish. Eggs are OK). This itinerary flags safe dishes at every stop — but ALWAYS confirm with staff. Soup curry shops are your best friend: many offer vegetable-only curry with egg on top, and some use kombu (kelp) dashi instead of bonito. Carry an allergy/diet card — we recommend printing one from justhungry.com/japan-dining-ستان.
⚠️ Hidden Fish & Meat Traps in Japanese Food
Watch out for: (1) Dashi — in miso soup, noodle broth, simmered vegetables, even rice seasoning. (2) Katsuobushi (bonito flakes) — sprinkled on okonomiyaki, takoyaki, spinach ohitashi. (3) Mentaiko/tarako — spicy fish roe, common in onigiri and pasta. (4) Tonkotsu/chicken broth — labelled as 'vegetable' ramen sometimes still has animal stock. (5) Gyoza wrappers — usually vegetarian, but fillings nearly always contain pork. SAFE bets: temple food (shōjin ryōri), Indian restaurants (Sapporo has several), soup curry with veggie option, tamago (egg) dishes, rice + pickles, edamame, tofu dishes (confirm no dashi).
🚂 Getting Around Sapporo
Sapporo's subway is simple — three lines (Namboku green, Tōzai orange, Tōhō blue). Get an ICOCA or Kitaca IC card at any station for tap-and-go. For Jōzankei Onsen: take the Jōtetsu Bus from Sapporo Station Bus Terminal (Route 7 or 8, ~75 min, ¥800 one-way). For Shiroi Koibito Park: Tōzai Line to Miyanosawa Station, then 7 min walk. Taxis are reasonable for short hops — around ¥1,000-1,500 within central Sapporo.
🌡️ March Weather in Sapporo
Late March in Sapporo: expect 0-7°C, possible snow flurries or light rain. Snow is still on the ground but melting. Dress in warm layers — thermal base, fleece, waterproof outer jacket. Warm waterproof boots essential, especially for Jōzankei. Indoor attractions (Shiroi Koibito, shopping arcades) are well-heated.
⛷️ Skiing Recommendation — Sapporo Teine
For the family skier heading to the slopes: Sapporo Teine (手稲) is the closest major resort — just 40 min by car/bus from central Sapporo. Two zones: Highland (advanced, Olympic-grade runs from the 1972 Games, stunning city views) and Olympia (beginner/intermediate, family-friendly). March conditions: spring snow, usually groomed well, slightly warmer. Lift tickets: ~¥5,400/day. Rental gear available. Bus: take the Teine shuttle from Sapporo Station (check schedule at sapporoteine.com). Alternatively, Kiroro (90 min) or Niseko (2.5 hrs) for powder seekers.
Culture, Comfort Food & Hot Springs
A gentle, unhurried day starting with Sapporo's historic covered arcade and a serene shrine visit, followed by a chocolate factory tour, a restorative hot spring soak in the mountains, and a cozy Hokkaido dinner.
🏮 Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade (狸小路商店街)
Sapporo's oldest covered shopping street, stretching 7 blocks. A relaxed morning stroll — browse tea shops, Japanese sweets, Hokkaido souvenir stores (Rokkatei, LeTAO, Royce chocolates), and folk craft shops. Fully covered so no worries about weather. Perfect warm-up before heading outdoors.
⛩️ Hokkaido Shrine (北海道神宮)
Sapporo's most important Shinto shrine, nestled in the old-growth forest of Maruyama Park. In late March, the park may still have snow on the ground with early signs of spring — a beautiful, serene walk. The shrine grounds are peaceful and uncrowded on weekdays. Draw an omikuji (fortune slip) for fun.
🍫 Shiroi Koibito Park (白い恋人パーク)
ISHIYA's charming chocolate factory and theme park with a European-style garden. Watch Shiroi Koibito cookies being made on the factory tour, explore the chocolate history museum, and try a cookie-decorating workshop. The Tudor-style buildings and clock tower are beautiful for photos. Warm and cozy inside.
♨️ Jōzankei Onsen (定山渓温泉)
A stunning hot spring valley 26 km south of Sapporo, surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and a gorge. The perfect way to unwind. Take a day-use onsen (higaeri nyūyoku) at one of the ryokan — Jōzankei Tsuruga Resort Spa Mori no Uta is excellent, with indoor/outdoor baths overlooking the Toyohira River gorge. The outdoor rotenburo with snow falling around you is magical.
🌃 Evening Stroll — Odori Park & TV Tower
After returning from Jōzankei, take a gentle evening walk through Odori Park. The Sapporo TV Tower is lit up beautifully at night. No need to go up — the view from the park is lovely. The park stretches 1.5 km east-west through the city center, lined with trees and sculptures. A peaceful end to the day.
