⚡ Before You Go — Essentials

🚄 Shinkansen Tips for Families

Book reserved seats (指定席 shiteiseki) for your group — the Nozomi has 2+3 seating so a family of 5 fits perfectly across one row. Children under 6 ride free on laps, ages 6-11 are half price. The trolley service ended on the Tokaido line — buy all snacks and drinks BEFORE boarding at Shin-Osaka station shops.

🧳 Luggage Strategy

Reserve oversized luggage space when booking if you have large suitcases (free but mandatory for bags over 160cm total). Rows at the back of each car have luggage areas. Alternatively, use takkyubin luggage forwarding — send bags from Moxy to Hilton Tokyo Bay the day before (about ¥2,000/bag, next-day delivery).

🌸 Early Cherry Blossoms

Late March in Tokyo is the start of cherry blossom season. The trees around Maihama and along Tokyo Bay may be just beginning to bloom — keep your eyes open for early sakura, especially along the Disney Resort monorail line.

💳 IC Cards & Payment

Load a Suica or PASMO IC card for seamless travel across all trains, subways, and convenience stores. Works on Osaka Metro, JR lines, and the Disney Resort monorail. Apple Pay Suica is the easiest option — add it before your trip.

Day 1 Honmachi, Osaka · Shin-Osaka · Tokyo Station · Maihama · Tokyo Disney Resort

Osaka to Tokyo Bay — Bullet Train & Disney Resort

Osaka to Tokyo Bay — Bullet Train & Disney Resort, Tokyo, Japan

Today is all about the journey AND the destination. You'll ride Japan's legendary Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo, then make your way to the magical Tokyo Disney Resort area. From bustling Osaka station shops to the waterfront wonder of Maihama, every step of this family travel day is an adventure.

Morning

🏨 Check Out — Moxy Osaka Honmachi

Start your day with breakfast at the Moxy (or grab onigiri and coffee from the Lawson convenience store nearby — it's right around the corner). Pack up and head out by 8:00–8:30am to give yourselves plenty of time.

⏰ Aim to leave the hotel by 8:00–8:30am
🍙 Convenience store breakfast is a classic Japan move — onigiri, tamago sando, Boss coffee
🧳 If you sent luggage ahead via takkyubin, you're traveling light!

🚇 Moxy → Honmachi Station → Shin-Osaka

Walk 5–7 minutes to Honmachi Station and take the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line (red line, direction: Senri-Chuo/Shin-Osaka). Exit at Shin-Osaka Station in about 15–20 minutes. Follow signs to the Shinkansen gates — they're well-marked in English.

🚶 Walk: 5–7 min from Moxy to Honmachi Station (Exit 7 is closest)
🚇 Midosuji Line toward Senri-Chuo — ride about 15–20 min to Shin-Osaka
💰 Metro fare: ~¥280/adult
📍 At Shin-Osaka, follow "Shinkansen" signs to the dedicated gates (separate from regular JR)

🍱 Ekiben Shopping at Shin-Osaka Station

This is one of the best parts of Shinkansen travel! Shin-Osaka has incredible ekiben (train bento) shops. Let each family member pick their own — it's a beloved Japanese tradition. The station is a food paradise with dozens of options.

🍱 Ekiben shops are inside the Shinkansen gate area — shop AFTER going through the gates
⭐ Must-try: Beef sukiyaki bento, Kobe beef meshi, Osaka takoyaki bento
🧃 Grab drinks too — tea, juice boxes for kids, and maybe a tall can of Asahi for the adults
🍬 Omiyage (souvenir snacks) shops here are amazing — 551 Horai pork buns are legendary
⚠️ No trolley service on this route anymore — buy everything before boarding!

🚄 Nozomi Shinkansen — Shin-Osaka → Tokyo

Board the Nozomi, Japan's fastest Shinkansen, and settle in for a comfortable 2 hour 30 minute ride. The Nozomi departs every 10–15 minutes, so no stress about catching a specific one. Sit on the right side (seats D and E) for a chance to see Mount Fuji on a clear day!

⏱️ Journey time: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
💺 Reserved seats: 2+3 layout — perfect for a family of 5 across one row
🗻 Mount Fuji view: sit on the RIGHT side (D/E seats) — appears about 1 hour after departure near Shizuoka
💰 Cost: ~¥13,870/adult one-way (children 6–11 half price, under 6 free on laps)
🔌 Power outlets at every seat in newer Nozomi trains
🚻 Spacious toilets at the end of each car — family-friendly
📱 Free Wi-Fi: connect to "Shinkansen Free Wi-Fi"
🎮 Great time for kids to watch downloaded shows on tablets
Pro tip: Buy Shinkansen tickets at the JR ticket office (みどりの窓口 Midori no Madoguchi) at Shin-Osaka. You can also use the SmartEX app to book in advance from your phone. Reserved seats are strongly recommended for a group of 5+ to sit together.
If anyone in the family has a Japan Rail Pass, note that the Nozomi is NOT covered. You'd need to take the Hikari instead (adds ~30 min). But if you're buying individual tickets, the Nozomi is the way to go.
Afternoon

🚆 Tokyo Station → Maihama (JR Keiyo Line)

Arriving at Tokyo Station is exciting but the station is HUGE. Follow signs for the JR Keiyo Line — it's a bit of a walk (about 10 minutes through underground passages). The Keiyo Line platform is at the far south end of the station. Board any local or rapid train toward Soga/Maihama.

🚶 The walk to the Keiyo Line platform is about 10 minutes inside Tokyo Station — follow the red signs
🚆 Ride: ~15–20 min to Maihama Station
💰 Fare: ~¥220/adult
⚠️ Don't confuse with the Musashino Line — they share platforms but go different directions
🎵 When you arrive at Maihama, you'll hear Disney music at the station!

🏰 Arriving at Maihama — Welcome to Disney Resort!

Step off at Maihama Station and you're in the Tokyo Disney Resort world. The Ikspiari shopping mall is directly connected to the station. If you want to head straight to the hotel, take a taxi (5 minutes) or ride the Disney Resort Line monorail one stop to Bayside Station.

🚕 Taxi to Hilton Tokyo Bay: ~5–10 min, around ¥800–1,000
🚝 Disney Resort Line monorail: Maihama → Bayside Station (¥260/adult, ~3 min)
🚌 Free Hilton shuttle runs from Bayside Station to the hotel
💡 If your room isn't ready, leave luggage at the hotel bell desk and go explore!

🛍️ Explore Ikspiari Shopping Mall

Ikspiari is Tokyo Disney Resort's massive shopping and entertainment complex — 140+ shops and 40+ restaurants right next to Maihama Station. It's the perfect place to spend your first afternoon without needing a park ticket. Kids will love the Disney Store, and there's a cinema, arcade, and tons of unique Japanese shops.

🌸 Bayside Walk Along Tokyo Bay

Take a stroll along the waterfront promenade near the Hilton Tokyo Bay. The bay area has beautiful walking paths with views across to the Tokyo skyline. In late March, you might catch the very first cherry blossoms starting to open — a magical family moment.

🌅 The bay faces west — beautiful for sunset viewing
🌸 Early sakura trees line the resort walkways
📸 Great family photo opportunities with Disney Resort monorail passing overhead
🚝 The Disney Resort Line monorail loop is scenic even just as a ride — circles the entire resort in ~13 min
