Pace: Relaxed
Best for: Couples · Foodies · Train Lovers · Culture Seekers

⚡ Before You Go — Essentials

🚂 Swiss Travel Pass

Buy a consecutive Swiss Travel Pass (18 days) before arrival — it covers all SBB trains, mountain railways (50% on most), lake boats, and city transport. Activate it on arrival day at Zurich Airport. Reserve panoramic seats on the GoldenPass Express and Glacier Express separately via SBB.ch.

🏔️ Altitude & Weather

Late April–May is one of the best times in Switzerland: valleys green with spring flowers, mountains still snowy and dramatic, fewer crowds than summer. Jungfraujoch averages -3°C in May; Montreux averages 16°C. Pack layers you can add and remove — temperatures swing 15°C between valley and summit.

🚫 Car-Free Villages

Both Wengen and Zermatt are entirely car-free. In Wengen, the cogwheel train to Lauterbrunnen is your lifeline. In Zermatt, small electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages move luggage. Most hotels arrange luggage transfers from the station — confirm when booking.

🍷 Swiss Dining & Tipping

Fine dining reservations must be made weeks in advance — especially Chez Vrony, Maison Décotterd, and Restaurant Pavillon. Service is included in Swiss restaurant bills; tipping 5–10% is a generous gesture but not expected. Valais wines (Fendant, Cornalin, Heida) and Lavaux Chasselas are exceptional and barely exported — drink them here.

💳 Costs & Payments

Switzerland is expensive but exceptional value for the quality. Budget $800–1,500/day for two including accommodation, meals, and activities at the luxury level. Swiss francs (CHF) are the currency; cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted almost universally. Tip: the SBB train app handles real-time departures and platform changes perfectly.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise & Five Lakes Walk

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise & Five Lakes Walk, Switzerland

Today you reach the highest cable car station in Europe — Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883m — and walk through glacial tunnels of blue ice. In the afternoon, the Five Lakes Walk is Zermatt's most beautiful hiking trail, with the Matterhorn reflected in five different alpine tarns.

Morning

Cable Car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Multi-stage cable cars rise from Zermatt to Trockener Steg (2,939m), then to Klein Matterhorn / Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3,883m) — the highest cable car station in Europe. In May, year-round skiing is still operating on the glacier.

Matterhorn Glacier Palace Ice Cave

Inside the mountain at 3,820m, a network of glacial ice tunnels carved directly into the Theodul Glacier reveals blue, sculpted ice walls. Ice Bar, ice sculptures, and the feeling of being deep inside a living glacier.

Schwarzsee Hike & Matterhorn Farewell

Schwarzsee Hike & Matterhorn Farewell, Switzerland

Your last full day in Zermatt is for getting as close to the Matterhorn as possible without a rope. The Schwarzsee lake at the mountain's foot is achingly beautiful — a dark glacial tarn with the pyramid peak directly above. Afternoon spa and an emotional final dinner.

Morning

Schwarzsee Hike (Lake at the Matterhorn's Foot)

Cable car to Furi, then up to Schwarzsee (2,582m) — the black lake cradled at the base of the Matterhorn. From here, every photo looks unreal. A small chapel, the Matterhorn looming overhead, and total Alpine solitude in the early morning.
