Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
Get oriented in the Mongolian capital — temples, markets, and the famous mutton dumplings.
🛬 Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport
Transfer to hotel in city center. Rest and adjust to the wide-open energy of UB.
🏛️ Gandantegchinlen Monastery
Mongolia's largest functioning Buddhist monastery. See the 26m gilded statue of Migjid Janraisig — it's covered in gold leaf and encrusted with precious stones.
🛍️ Narantuul (Black Market)
Not actually black market — it's Mongolia's biggest open bazaar. Pick up a deel (traditional robe), horsehair souvenirs, or just soak in the chaos.
Genghis Khan Statue & Into Terelj
Drive east into the countryside. The city vanishes fast — rolling green steppe and granite formations replace concrete within an hour.
🗿 Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue
The 40m stainless steel horseman at Tsonjin Boldog. Ride the elevator to the viewing deck on the horse's head for panoramic steppe views. The museum below covers the 13th-century Mongol Empire at its peak.
🚙 Drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park
1.5 hours from UB through gradually opening steppe. Stop at ovoo (sacred stone cairns) to circle three times for safe travels — a Mongolian tradition.
🪨 Turtle Rock & Aryapala Meditation Temple
The famous granite tortoise formation. Hike 20 min up to the hilltop Buddhist temple for panoramic valley views over the Terelj river valley.
🏕️ Ger Camp Check-in
Stay at a tourist ger camp in Terelj. Heated felt tents, communal dining hall. First taste of airag (fermented mare's milk) with your hosts — it's sour, slightly fizzy, and an acquired taste.
Horse Trek Day 1 — Into the Khentii Foothills
Saddle up. Your guide matches you with a sturdy Mongolian horse — small, tough, semi-wild. Ride north along the Tuul River into increasingly wild terrain.
🐴 Meet Your Horses & Pack Up
Your horseman guide introduces the Mongolian horses. Gear and supplies are packed on a third horse. Quick riding lesson if needed — Mongolian horses respond differently than Western ones.
🏔️ Ride Along the Tuul River
4–5 hours in the saddle through riverside meadows and larch forest. Ford shallow river crossings. Watch for marmots popping out of burrows and golden eagles circling overhead.
⛺ Wild Camp in the Foothills
Pitch tents at the edge of the forest where the steppe meets the Khentii foothills. Campfire under a sky with more stars than you've ever seen. No light pollution for hundreds of kilometers.
Horse Trek Day 2 — Deep Steppe & Nomad Encounter
The deepest day. No roads, no fences, no phone signal. Just grass, sky, horses, and the occasional herd of yaks on the horizon.
🌄 Dawn Ride Over the Mountain Pass
5–6 hours riding through open steppe and over a 2,000m pass. The views are absurd — 360° grassland stretching to every horizon. This is what Mongolia looks like in your imagination, except it's real.
🏠 Visit a Nomadic Herder Family
Stop at a family's summer camp. They'll offer salty milk tea (suutei tsai) and aaruul (dried curds). Watch how they manage their herd of horses, sheep, and goats across the open range.
🐴 Wide Valley Crossing
Ride through a broad valley with wildflowers in full July bloom — purple iris, yellow buttercups, white edelweiss. Your guide might let you try a Mongolian gallop across the flat.
⛺ Camp by a Stream
Set up camp in a protected valley near fresh water. Help your guide prepare khorkhog (hot stone BBQ) — meat cooked with river stones heated in a fire. A once-in-a-lifetime meal.
Horse Trek Day 3 — Sacred Ovoo & Forest Trails
Riding through ancient larch forests toward sacred sites. The landscape shifts from open steppe to Siberian taiga — dense, quiet, primordial.
🌲 Forest Trail Ride
4 hours through dense larch and birch forest. The trail climbs gradually — Mongolian horses handle the rocky terrain like mountain goats. The air smells like pine and wild thyme.
🪨 Sacred Ovoo Ceremony
Arrive at a large ovoo — a sacred cairn marking a mountain pass. Circle it three times clockwise, add a stone, and leave an offering. These have been used for safe passage for thousands of years.
🦅 Eagle Spotting & Ridge Ride
Ride along a high ridge with views into the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area. Golden eagles and Himalayan vultures circle the thermals below you.
🏕️ Herder's Ger Homestay
Tonight, sleep in a ger hosted by a herder family. They'll share stories of the steppe over buuz and milk tea. Genuine hospitality — they'll refuse your money and insist you're a guest.
Horse Trek Day 4 — Return Ride & Farewell
The final riding day. Four days in the saddle changes you — you'll feel it in your seat and your soul. Say goodbye to your horse.
🐴 Final Morning Ride
4-hour ride back toward Terelj through rolling hills. By now you and your horse have an understanding — a slight shift of weight, a click of the tongue. Savor the last hours.
👋 Farewell to Horses & Guides
Unsaddle for the last time. Tip your horseman guide well — they kept you alive, fed, and laughing in the wilderness for four days.
♨️ Hot Springs Soak
Drive to natural hot springs in the Terelj area. Your legs, back, and everything else will thank you profoundly after 20+ hours in the saddle.
Ulaanbaatar & Departure
Back in the city for a final morning of culture and shopping before flying home with steppe dust still in your hair.
🚙 Drive Back to Ulaanbaatar
1.5-hour drive from Terelj. The city feels startlingly loud after four days of silence and horse hooves.
🏛️ National Museum of Mongolia
Excellent overview of Mongol history — from dinosaur fossils through the empire to the Soviet era. Don't miss the traditional costume exhibit and the full-scale ger reconstruction.
🧶 Cashmere Shopping
Mongolia produces some of the world's finest cashmere. Visit Gobi Cashmere factory store for high-quality pieces at 50–70% less than Western retail.
🛫 Depart Chinggis Khaan Airport
Head to the airport with a head full of steppe memories and probably some beautifully sore muscles.
