βοΈ Weather
Late April marks the end of dry season β expect 85β90Β°F, mostly sunny with occasional afternoon showers as the green season begins. Perfect surf conditions and lush jungle.
π Surf Gear
Board rentals are everywhere on the Guiones main road (~$15/half day). Safari Surf and Coconut Harry's are the go-to schools. No wetsuit needed β water is 82Β°F.
π΅ Money
Many spots are cash-only (especially sodas). ATMs exist but can run out. Bring USD as backup β widely accepted. Colones give you better prices at local spots.
π§ Yoga
Drop-in classes at Bodhi Tree (~$20), Harmony Hotel, and various studios. No booking needed for most β just show up 10 min early.
π¦ Wildlife
Howler monkeys are everywhere (you'll hear them at dawn). Iguanas sun on roads. Sea turtles nest at Ostional AprβDec. Keep distance, hire local guides.
Arrival & Playa Pelada Sunset
Touch down in the jungle, settle in, taste your first casado, and watch the sun melt into the Pacific from Nosara's most intimate beach.
Arrive in Nosara
Fly into Nosara Airport (NOB) or shuttle from Liberia (LIR, ~2.5 hrs). The tiny airstrip drops you right into the jungle. Arrange pickup through your hotel β roads here are unpaved and an adventure themselves.
Check in at Selina Nosara
A solid solo-traveler base in Playa Guiones with coworking, pool, and surf rentals on site. Great for meeting other travelers. Private rooms are comfortable at ~$80/night. The common areas buzz with digital nomads and surfers.
Explore Playa Pelada
Walk the rocky coastline and tide pools of Playa Pelada. It's smaller and more intimate than Guiones β look for howler monkeys in the trees above the beach path. The blowhole rock formation at the north end is worth finding.
Surf Day at Playa Guiones
Paddle into one of Central America's best learning waves, refuel with fresh seafood, and chase the golden hour back into the lineup.
Surf Lesson at Safari Surf School
Playa Guiones is one of the best learning waves in Central America β long, consistent beach breaks that roll in like clockwork. Safari Surf is the OG school here with patient instructors. Book a 2-hour morning session when the tide is right.
Beach Time at Playa Guiones
Grab a patch of sand on this long, wide beach. The surf breaks are mesmerizing to watch even from shore. Late April water temps hover around 82Β°F β no wetsuit needed. Watch for pelicans diving into the lineup.
Sunset Surf Session
Head back to Guiones for the golden hour session. Even if you wipe out all session, paddling out into a Nosara sunset is a core memory. The beach faces almost due west β pure magic.
Yoga, Jungle & Wellness
Flow through a morning yoga class, hike through mangrove forests alive with wildlife, then reward yourself with a spa treatment and the most unforgettable dinner in Nosara.
Morning Yoga at Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort
Nosara is the yoga capital of Costa Rica. Bodhi Tree offers drop-in classes in their stunning open-air shala surrounded by jungle. The 7:30 AM vinyasa flow is popular β arrive 10 minutes early.
Nosara Biological Reserve Hike
This private reserve protects mangroves and tropical dry forest along the Nosara River. Trails are well-marked and you'll likely spot iguanas, howler monkeys, and dozens of bird species. The canopy views of the river meeting the ocean are spectacular.
Spa Treatment at Onda Wellness
Treat yourself to a massage or holistic treatment. Nosara's wellness scene is world-class. Onda offers everything from deep tissue to sound healing in a beautiful jungle setting. Solo travel pro-tip: this is the perfect mid-trip reset.
Sea Turtles & Beach Hopping
Drive north to one of the world's most important sea turtle nesting sites, then beach-hop south through fishing villages and end with the finest dinner in Nosara.
Ostional National Wildlife Refuge
One of the most important Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting sites in the world. Late April is nesting season β you may witness an arribada (mass nesting event where thousands of turtles come ashore simultaneously). Hire a local guide at the entrance who knows where the turtles are. The beach is wild and raw.
Playa Nosara & River Mouth
On the way back, stop at Playa Nosara where the river meets the sea. This is a quieter, less touristy beach great for birdwatching. Crocodiles occasionally appear at the river mouth β keep a safe distance but it's thrilling to spot one.
Playa Garza Visit
A 15-minute drive south, this quiet fishing village beach is the antithesis of the Guiones scene. Watch local fishermen bring in their catch, wade in calm waters, and enjoy the solitude. A glimpse of old Costa Rica before the surf tourists arrived.
Adventure Day β ATV, Waterfall & Final Surf
Your last full day β fill it with adrenaline. ATV through the jungle to hidden waterfalls, catch one more surf session, then celebrate with a farewell dinner and live music.
ATV Tour to Hidden Waterfalls
Book a half-day ATV tour through the Nosara jungle to remote waterfalls. You'll ford rivers, climb muddy trails, and swim in a jungle waterfall pool. The rainy season is just starting so the falls should be flowing nicely.
Final Surf at Playa Guiones
One last surf session. By now you should be popping up consistently on Guiones' forgiving waves. Rent a board from any shop on the main road. The afternoon glass-off around 3β4 PM often produces the cleanest waves of the day.
Sunset at Mirador La Esperanza
Hike up to this viewpoint above Nosara for a panoramic sunset over the Pacific and jungle canopy. It's a short but steep climb β bring water. The 360-degree view is the best vantage point in the area.
Live Music at Gilded Iguana
The Gilded Iguana hotel bar is the social hub of Nosara. Check if they have live music tonight β it's common in season. Great spot to meet fellow travelers over a final Imperial beer and swap stories from the trip.
Final Morning & Departure
One last sunrise walk, a farewell aΓ§aΓ bowl, and a smoothie for the road. Nosara doesn't let go easily β you'll already be planning your return.
Sunrise Walk on Playa Guiones
Set your alarm early for one last beach walk. The sunrise paints the jungle-backed coastline in gold and pink. You'll likely have the beach nearly to yourself. Breathe in that salt air one last time.
Last-Minute Shopping
Pick up souvenirs on the Guiones main road. Look for locally made jewelry, surf-inspired art, and Costa Rican coffee beans to take home. The small shops here support local artisans.
Depart Nosara
Head to Nosara Airport for your domestic flight, or begin the scenic drive back to Liberia. If driving, leave 3 hours for the unpaved roads. Pura vida β you'll be back.
