⚡ Before You Go — Essentials
💰 The Budget Challenge
Your $1000-2000 budget for 41 days is very tight (~$25-50/day for two). It's possible but requires discipline. This plan focuses on free activities, cooking your own meals, and smart transport. Prioritize hostels or budget Airbnbs with kitchens. Most of your budget will be on accommodation and transport.
🚆 Getting Around
Buy a Belgian Rail Pass (Go Pass for under 26, Rail Pass for 26+). It offers 10 journeys for a fixed price, making train travel much cheaper. Within cities, walk everywhere. Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent also have excellent tram/bus systems for longer distances.
🛏️ Accommodation
Book hostels well in advance, especially for summer. Look for ones with good communal kitchens to save money on food. Use grocery stores like ALDI, Lidl, and Colruyt for the best prices. Pack a reusable water bottle and coffee cup.
🍽️ Eating on a Dime
Cook 90% of your meals. For treats, stick to street food: frites (~€3-5), waffles (~€2-4). Many breweries offer affordable tours with tastings included. A 'dagschotel' (dish of the day) at lunchtime is the cheapest way to eat out.
🗣️ Language
Belgium has three official languages: Dutch (in Flanders), French (in Wallonia), and German (in the east). Brussels is officially bilingual. English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and by younger people.
