⚡ Before You Go — Essentials
🥬 Vegetarian Dining in Australia & NZ
Both countries are increasingly veg-friendly. In cities, dedicated vegetarian restaurants abound — Melbourne and Sydney are world-class for plant-based dining. Regional pub menus usually have veggie burgers, salads, pasta. Always specify 'no meat, no fish, no chicken.' HappyCow app is your best friend. Darwin has an incredible Southeast Asian food scene — lots of vegetarian options at the Mindil Beach markets.
🌡️ Autumn/Winter Weather (Southern Hemisphere)
May–June is autumn into winter. Sydney: 12–20°C, mild. Melbourne: 8–15°C, pack warm layers. Tasmania: 5–12°C, cold — bring a proper jacket and waterproofs. Darwin/NT: 20–32°C, dry season — the BEST time to visit (no humidity, no crocs in swimming holes, cooler evenings). Queensland/Cairns: 15–25°C, ideal. New Zealand: 5–15°C, bring thermals and waterproofs. Uluru: 10–20°C in May, cold nights — bring a down jacket for sunrise.
🚗 Getting Around
Domestic flights between major cities via Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Rex — book 4–6 weeks ahead for cheapest fares. Rent cars for road trips — Australians drive on the LEFT, give way RIGHT at roundabouts. Speed cameras are everywhere and fines are severe. Opal card (Sydney), myki (Melbourne), go card (Brisbane). In NZ, rent a car — public transport outside Auckland and Wellington is very limited.
💰 Budget Strategy
Australia is expensive. Average daily for two: $250–400 AUD (accommodation, food, transport, activities). Save money: supermarket lunches from Coles or Woolworths (excellent deli sections), BYO restaurants (bring your own wine), free beaches and national parks, self-catering in Airbnb apartments. Splurge on experiences, not meals. Key splurges worth it: BridgeClimb, reef snorkeling, Uluru Sounds of Silence, MONA. NZ is slightly cheaper: ~$200–350 NZD/day for two.
📱 SIM Cards & Connectivity
Buy an Australian SIM at Sydney Airport: Telstra (best rural coverage, more expensive) or Optus (cheaper, excellent in cities). 30-day prepaid plans: ~$30–50 AUD for 40GB+. Download offline Google Maps for ALL road trip sections before leaving cities — regional Australia has patchy 4G, and parts of NT/outback have none. In NZ, switch to a Spark or Vodafone NZ SIM.
👨👩👧 Family & Friends Visits
This itinerary weaves in quality time with friends and family in Sydney, Yamba, Byron Bay, Darwin, Adelaide, Tasmania, and New Plymouth (NZ). Flex days are built in near each location. The golden rule: don't overschedule family time. The best visits happen organically — turn up with wine, go with the flow, and let your people show you their world.

📋 Visas & Entry
- Australia: Most nationalities need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) — apply online at eta.homeaffairs.gov.au, $20 AUD fee, usually approved instantly.
- New Zealand: Most nationalities can enter visa-free for 90 days (NZeTA required from some countries — check immigration.govt.nz). $17 NZD online.
- Both countries have strict biosecurity — declare ALL food, plant material, and animal products at customs. Fines are large and customs officers are serious.
- Travel insurance is essential — medical costs in Australia are high without Medicare (residents only). World Nomads or SafetyWing recommended.
🏥 Health & Safety
- Sun protection: Australian UV is intense even in autumn. SPF 50+, sunhat, and UV-protective clothing. This is not optional.
- Croc safety: In NT and Queensland, NEVER swim in rivers, lakes, or estuaries unless marked safe. This is life-or-death serious. Saltwater crocs are enormous and fast.
- Box jellyfish: In Queensland tropical waters, swim at patrolled beaches with stinger nets (May–Oct is safer but check local advice).
- Snakes: Australia has many venomous snakes. Watch where you step in bush/grass. If bitten, don't wash the bite — keep still and call 000 immediately.
- Emergency: Australia 000 (police, fire, ambulance). NZ 111. Both are free from any phone.
- Hospitals: Major cities have excellent hospitals. Remote areas (Kakadu, Uluru) have basic first aid — medical evacuation is expensive (hence: travel insurance).
🌏 Cultural Notes
- Aboriginal culture: Australia's First Nations peoples have the world's oldest continuous culture. Respect sacred sites — don't climb Uluru (closed since 2019), stay on designated paths at rock art sites, ask before photographing.
- Māori culture (NZ): Powhiri (welcoming ceremonies), waiata (song), and the haka are taonga (treasures). Accept hongi (nose press greeting) graciously. Remove shoes before entering a marae.
- Tipping: Australia and NZ are not tipping cultures. Service staff earn proper wages. Tipping is appreciated but never expected.
- BYO restaurants: Many Australian restaurants are BYO (bring your own wine/beer). Usually a small corkage fee applies. This can halve your dinner bill.
- Time zones: Australia has 3 main time zones (AEST/ACST/AWST). Add 30 min when moving from NT to QLD; subtract 1.5 hrs moving from east coast to NT.
