⚡ Before You Go — Essentials
🍂 Autumn Weather
May is mid-autumn in Sydney — expect 15–20°C (59–68°F) during the day, dropping to 11–13°C at night. Sunny and pleasant with low humidity. Pack layers: a light jacket for evenings, comfortable walking shoes, and a rain layer for the odd shower. Sunset is around 5:10pm.
🚇 Getting Around
Tap on and off with a contactless card or phone on buses, trains, ferries and light rail — the Opal system covers everything. Ferries are the most scenic way to travel. The Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is a must-do. Uber is widely available.
🌿 Vegetarian Sydney
Sydney's vegetarian scene is world-class. Yellow (Potts Point) and Flyover Fritterie (Redfern) are dedicated veggie restaurants. Most Australian cafés and restaurants have strong vegetarian options — look for 'v' or 'vg' on menus. Asian cuisines (Indian, Chinese, Japanese) are particularly veggie-friendly.
🐋 Whale Season Begins
May marks the start of humpback whale migration along Sydney's coast. Keep your eyes on the ocean from any headland — North Head, South Head, and the Bondi to Coogee walk are prime spotting locations. Binoculars are worth packing.
Harbour Icons & First Impressions
Arrive in Sydney and fall in love with the harbour. Wander through The Rocks' cobblestone lanes, explore Barangaroo's Aboriginal cultural precinct, catch your first golden-hour glimpse of the Opera House, and settle in with a vegetarian feast under the fig trees.
The Rocks Discovery Walk
After settling into your hotel, explore The Rocks — Sydney's oldest neighbourhood. Cobblestone laneways, heritage pubs, and sandstone warehouses turned galleries. Duck into the Rocks Discovery Museum (free) for a quick history hit, then wander the foreshore with the Harbour Bridge looming overhead.
Barangaroo Reserve & Wulugul Walk
Walk along the harbour foreshore to Barangaroo Reserve — a headland park built on reclaimed industrial land, planted entirely with native species. The Wulugul Walk traces the waterfront and features Aboriginal art installations.
Opera House & Harbour at Golden Hour
Walk to the Opera House forecourt and watch the late afternoon light paint the harbour gold. Sunset is early in May (around 5:10pm), so head here by 4:30pm. The eastern side of Circular Quay gives you both the Opera House and the Bridge in one frame.
Harbour Adventures — Kayak at Sunrise, Bridge at Twilight
Today is pure adventure. Start with a sunrise kayak past the Opera House and under the Harbour Bridge — the city from water level at first light is unforgettable. Spend the afternoon exploring the Art Gallery of NSW, then cap the day with a twilight BridgeClimb as the city lights flicker on below you.
Sunrise Kayak — Opera House & Harbour Bridge
Paddle past the world's most iconic harbour at sunrise. A guided kayak tour launches from Lavender Bay and takes you under the Harbour Bridge and past the Opera House as the city wakes up. The water is glassy in the early morning, the light is golden, and you'll have photos that no tour bus can match.
Art Gallery of NSW & Sydney Modern
After a lazy post-kayak brunch, visit the Art Gallery of NSW and its stunning new extension, Sydney Modern. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander galleries are world-class — emotionally powerful and beautifully curated. The new building has a rooftop terrace with harbour views.
Twilight BridgeClimb
The absolute highlight. Climb the arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the sun sets and the city transitions from golden hour to glittering nightscape. At the summit — 134 metres above the harbour — you get 360° views of the Opera House, the harbour, and the suburbs stretching to the Blue Mountains. The twilight climb catches both daylight and city lights.
Northern Beaches — Family, Bush Trails & Coastal Charm
Today is all about the Northern Beaches — your family's home turf. Start with a beautiful bushwalk around Manly Dam (right next to North Balgowlah), spend time with family, then head to Manly for a stroll along the Corso and a sunset dinner at a harbourside spot. This is the relaxed, local side of Sydney that most tourists never see.
Manly Dam Reserve Bushwalk
Just minutes from North Balgowlah, Manly Dam Reserve is a hidden gem — a beautiful bushland loop around the dam with eucalyptus forest, wildflowers, rock pools, and birdlife. The 7.5km circuit walk takes about 2.5 hours and winds through native bush with water views.
Family Time in North Balgowlah
Spend the afternoon catching up with family. North Balgowlah is a quiet, leafy suburb nestled between Manly Dam bushland and the harbour. Balgowlah village (just down the hill) has several great cafés on Condamine Street if you need a spot.
Manly Corso & Beach Stroll
Head to Manly (10 min drive from North Balgowlah) and walk the iconic Corso — the pedestrian boulevard connecting the ferry wharf to the ocean beach. Manly Beach is gorgeous in autumn: golden light, fewer crowds, and Norfolk pines casting long shadows on the sand.
Sunset at Manly Wharf & Harbour Views
Watch the sun set from Manly Wharf as the harbour turns golden. The views across to the city skyline from here are spectacular. If you're catching the ferry back, the evening crossing is beautiful.
Blue Mountains — Misty Valleys, Ancient Forest & Village Charm
Escape the city for a day in the spectacular Blue Mountains — a UNESCO World Heritage wilderness just 90 minutes from Sydney. Dramatic cliff faces, cascading waterfalls, the world's steepest railway through Jurassic-era rainforest, and the charming village of Leura with its cafés and autumn colours.
Drive to the Blue Mountains & Three Sisters
Leave early and head west toward the Blue Mountains — the escarpment rises dramatically as you climb. Your first stop is Echo Point, where the Three Sisters rock formation towers above the Jamison Valley. On an autumn morning, the valley fills with blue eucalyptus haze — the phenomenon that gives the mountains their name.
Wentworth Falls Lookout
A short detour to Wentworth Falls gives you one of the mountains' most dramatic views — a waterfall tumbling 187 metres into the Valley of the Waters. The lookout is an easy 10-minute walk from the car park.
Scenic World — Railway, Skyway & Rainforest
Ride the Scenic Railway — the world's steepest incline railway — down into ancient Jurassic rainforest. Walk the boardwalk through towering tree ferns and listen for lyrebirds. Take the Skyway cable car back for panoramic valley views.
Leura Village Wander & Return to Sydney
Stroll through Leura's tree-lined streets — the autumn leaves in May are beautiful. Browse antique shops, pick up handmade chocolates from Josophan's Fine Chocolates, and soak up the village atmosphere before heading back to Sydney.
Coastal Walk, Ocean Pools & Newtown Food Crawl
Sydney's most famous walk — the Bondi to Coogee coastal trail — is even better in autumn: golden light, crisp air, and far fewer crowds than summer. After four beaches and dramatic sandstone cliffs, head to Newtown for a vegetarian food crawl through Sydney's most eclectic dining strip.
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Sydney's most iconic walk — 6km of jaw-dropping coastal scenery from Bondi to Coogee. Dramatic sandstone cliffs, hidden coves, Aboriginal rock carvings, and four beautiful beaches along the way. In autumn, the path is peaceful, the light is golden, and you can actually hear the waves.
Bronte Beach & Ocean Pool Swim
Take a breather at Bronte Beach — a gorgeous cove with a grassy park, Norfolk pines, and a stunning ocean pool carved into the rocks. The Bronte Baths are free to use and filled by the ocean — swimming in autumn is crisp, invigorating, and incredibly rewarding.
Newtown Vegetarian Food Crawl
Newtown is Sydney's inner-west bohemian heartland — and arguably the best neighbourhood in Australia for vegetarians. King Street is lined with vegetarian-friendly restaurants, bars, and cafés. Spend the evening hopping between a few favourites.
Spit to Manly Walk & Farewell to the Harbour
Your last day in Sydney is about one of the city's greatest hidden gems — the Spit Bridge to Manly Walk. This 10km coastal trail winds through Sydney Harbour National Park with harbour views, hidden beaches, and native bushland. Finish at Manly, and close out the trip with a farewell sunset at Opera Bar.
Spit Bridge to Manly Walk
The Spit to Manly Walk is Sydney's best-kept walking secret — a 10km trail through Sydney Harbour National Park that rivals the Bondi to Coogee walk in beauty but sees a fraction of the crowds. The path winds along harbour foreshores, through native bushland, past Aboriginal shell middens, and along hidden harbour beaches. Allow 3.5–4 hours and savour every step.
Manly Beach Recovery & North Head Lookout
After arriving in Manly, grab lunch and rest your legs at the beach. If you have energy, the short walk to North Head gives spectacular harbour entrance views — and May is prime time for spotting humpback whales beginning their northern migration.
Farewell Sunset at Opera Bar
End your trip where it began — at the harbour. Opera Bar, nestled under the Opera House sails, is the ultimate spot for sunset drinks. Watch the sky turn pink over the Harbour Bridge and raise a glass to six days of vegetarian feasts, harbour adventures, and autumn magic.
