Arrive, Hit the Beach & Watch Your First Sunset
Get to Nosara, drop your bags, get your feet in the sand. That's the entire plan. The Pacific coast sunset will do the rest.
Get to Nosara & Check In
Whether you flew into Liberia and took a shuttle or caught a SANSA puddle-jumper straight into Nosara's airstrip, you're here. Check into your accommodation near Playa Guiones โ this is where the action is. Hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs all cluster in this area.
Sunset at Playa Pelada
Walk or drive 10 minutes north to Playa Pelada โ a smaller, rockier beach that's the preferred sunset spot for locals. The rocky outcrops and tide pools give it more character than Guiones. Find a spot on the rocks, crack open a beer from the nearest tienda, and watch the sky turn orange and pink over the Pacific. Every single night here is a show.
At low tide, explore the tide pools โ small crabs, sea urchins, starfish, and tiny fish trapped in the volcanic rock pools. Bring water shoes if you have them.
Morning Yoga, Afternoon Surf & Local Eats
The quintessential Nosara day. Start with yoga as the sun comes up, fuel up, then paddle out for your first surf session. This is why people come here.
Morning Yoga Class
Nosara is one of the yoga capitals of Central America. Drop into a morning class at one of the many studios โ most welcome walk-ins and all levels. Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort runs excellent open classes in their stunning open-air shala. Harmony Hotel also has daily classes with top instructors. The Nosara Yoga Institute is the OG โ they've been here since the '90s.
Classes typically run 7:00โ8:30 AM. The combination of warm morning air, jungle sounds, and a good flow will set the tone for your entire trip.
Surf Lesson at Playa Guiones
This is the main event. Playa Guiones is one of the best learn-to-surf beaches in Central America โ long, consistent beach breaks, warm water, sandy bottom (no reef to worry about), and waves that are forgiving but fun. Dozens of surf schools operate right on the beach.
Recommended: Safari Surf School or Coconut Harry's Surf Shop โ both have great instructors, small group sizes, and cater to beginners. A 2-hour group lesson with board rental runs about $50โ65. Private lessons are $80โ100.
You'll be standing up by the end of your first session โ Guiones is that kind of wave. The instructors know exactly where to position you for the best beginner breaks.
Beach Time or Pool Day
After surfing and a big casado, you've earned a lazy afternoon. Options: grab a hammock at your hotel, read a book on Guiones beach under a palm tree, or wander the little shops along the Guiones road. There's no agenda. That's the point.
If you're feeling social, the pool area at Selina or the Gilded Iguana bar is where solo travelers naturally congregate in the afternoon. Easy to strike up conversation.
Jungle Walk, Howler Monkeys & One More Surf
Your last full day. Start with wildlife, surf again (you'll want to), and close it out with the best sunset spot you haven't tried yet.
Nosara Biological Reserve
Wake up early and head to the Nosara Biological Reserve โ a protected mangrove and tropical forest along the Nosara River. The trails are short (1โ2 hours total) but packed with wildlife. You'll almost certainly see (and hear) howler monkeys โ their roars carry for miles and are one of the defining sounds of Nosara. Also look for iguanas, white-faced capuchins, tropical birds, and crocodiles in the river.
The reserve is community-managed and donations support local conservation. Go early (6:30โ8:00 AM) when animals are most active and the heat is manageable.
Back to Guiones
You surfed yesterday and you're hooked. Go back for round two. If you took a group lesson yesterday, try a solo board rental today ($10โ15/half day) and practice what you learned. The muscle memory from yesterday will surprise you. Or book another lesson to refine your pop-up.
The stretch of Guiones closest to the Nosara Surf Shop tends to have the most consistent beginner-friendly waves. The vibe in the lineup is friendly โ people chat between sets, share waves, and cheer each other on. This is not a localized, aggressive lineup.
Afternoon Yoga or Treat Yourself to a Massage
After two days of surfing, your shoulders and arms will be reminding you they exist. Either drop into an afternoon yoga class (restorative/yin classes are perfect for sore surf muscles) or book a massage. Tica Massage and Nosara Wellness Center both offer excellent treatments at reasonable prices ($50โ80/hour).
Sunset on Guiones
You did Pelada on Day 1. Tonight, stay on Guiones for sunset. It's a wider beach with more space, and the sight of surfers silhouetted against the orange sky is iconic Nosara. Grab a beer and sit on the sand. If you meet people at the surf break or yoga, this is when everyone naturally gathers.
Nightcap: Walk to Olga's Bar at Playa Pelada โ a tiny, iconic local bar right on the beach. Cold beers, sandy floor, and the sound of waves. It's the most Nosara way to end a night.
One Last Sunrise, Then Pura Vida
A gentle last morning. No rushing. Soak in the final hours of Nosara time before heading back to the real world.
Sunrise on Playa Guiones
Set an alarm for sunrise (~5:45 AM this time of year). Walk down to Guiones beach. The sunrise here isn't over the ocean (that's the west coast for you), but the early morning light on the beach is golden and soft. You'll see surfers already in the water, pelicans diving, and maybe a troop of howler monkeys moving through the trees behind the beach. It's impossibly peaceful.
Head to the Airport
If flying SANSA out of Nosara, the airstrip is 10 minutes away โ arrive 45 minutes before your flight. If shuttling back to Liberia, allow 2.5โ3 hours for the drive (book your shuttle the day before). Stop in the town of Nicoya for a quick coffee and stretch if the drive feels long.
