⚡ Before You Go — Essentials
🚇 Getting Around
Get Oyster cards or use contactless bank cards on the Tube. Daily caps keep costs reasonable (~£8/day Zones 1-2). The Tube is fastest but buses show you more of the city. Walking is often best in central London.
💷 Money Tips
Cards accepted almost everywhere. Tipping: 10-12.5% at restaurants (check if service charge is included). No tipping at pubs or cafés. ATMs (cashpoints) are everywhere but avoid the ones in tourist shops — they charge fees.
🌦️ April Weather
Expect 10-16°C with a mix of sun, clouds, and occasional rain. Pack layers and a light waterproof jacket. London in spring is gorgeous — cherry blossoms, parks in bloom, and long evenings.
🏨 Where to Stay
South Bank or Southwark for central location and value. Covent Garden or Soho for walkability to everything. Shoreditch for trendy vibes. Avoid staying near Heathrow — it's far from the action.
🎭 Theatre Tips
Book West End shows on TodayTix app for discounts. TKTS booth in Leicester Square has same-day half-price tickets. Book popular shows (Hamilton, Wicked) 2-3 weeks ahead.
📱 Useful Apps
Citymapper (best transport app), TodayTix (theatre), OpenTable/Resy (restaurants), Google Maps (walking routes).
South Bank, Westminster & First London Evening
Westminster & Big Ben
Start at Westminster Tube station for the iconic exit — step out and Big Ben is right there. Walk past the Houses of Parliament and through Parliament Square (statues of Churchill, Mandela, Gandhi).
Cross Westminster Bridge
Walk across for the classic postcard view — Big Ben behind you, London Eye ahead. Stop for photos at the midpoint.
London Eye (Optional)
The 30-minute rotation gives stunning 360° views over London. Pre-book online to skip the queue (£30-35pp). Best on a clear day.
South Bank Walk → Borough Market
Stroll along the Thames path past the Southbank Centre, National Theatre, and Tate Modern. End at Borough Market for a late lunch — London's best food in one place.
Thames Sunset Walk
Walk back along the South Bank as the city lights up. The stretch between Waterloo Bridge and Westminster is magical at dusk — Parliament glows gold across the river.
Cocktails at The Beaufort Bar
End your first night in style at The Savoy's art deco cocktail bar. Gold-leaf ceiling, live piano, impeccable drinks. Dress smart-casual.
Royal London & Soho Night Out
Buckingham Palace & Changing of the Guard
Arrive by 10:30am to get a good spot for the Changing of the Guard (11am, check schedule — not daily). Even without the ceremony, the palace and Victoria Memorial are impressive.
St James's Park
London's prettiest park is right next to the palace. Walk through to see the pelicans (fed daily at 2:30pm), the lake, and stunning views of Buckingham Palace from the bridge.
British Museum
One of the world's greatest museums — and it's free. Must-sees: Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, Parthenon Marbles, Sutton Hoo treasure. You could spend days here but 2-3 hours hits the highlights.
Covent Garden Stroll
Walk south to Covent Garden for street performers in the piazza, the Apple Market, and a coffee break. Peek into the Royal Opera House lobby (free).
Soho Dinner & Drinks
Soho is London's beating heart for food and nightlife. Narrow streets packed with restaurants, bars, and character. Wander Dean Street, Frith Street, and Old Compton Street.
West End Show or Soho Cocktails
Option A: Catch a West End show (Shaftesbury Avenue theatres are steps away). Option B: Bar hop through Soho — try Bar Termini for negronis, Swift for whisky cocktails, or The French House for a pint of history.
Tower of London, East End & Shoreditch
Tower of London
Arrive at opening (10am) to beat the crowds. Join a free Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tour — they're hilarious and incredibly knowledgeable. See the Crown Jewels, the White Tower, and the spot where Anne Boleyn lost her head.
Tower Bridge
Walk across — it's free and the views are great. The glass floor walkway and Victorian engine rooms cost £12 if you want to go inside.
Sky Garden
Free 360° views from the top of the 'Walkie Talkie' building. Book free tickets online in advance — they release them 3 weeks ahead and go fast.
Spitalfields & Brick Lane
Walk through Spitalfields Market (food, vintage, crafts) into Brick Lane. Street art everywhere, vintage shops, and London's curry mile. Perfect for wandering.
Shoreditch Evening
Shoreditch comes alive at night. Start with dinner, then explore the bar scene — rooftop bars, speakeasies, craft cocktail spots, and live music.
Shoreditch Bar Crawl
Happiness Forgets (basement speakeasy, incredible cocktails), Discount Suit Company (bar hidden in a suit shop entrance), or Cargo (club under the railway arches). Shoreditch has London's best nightlife density.
Notting Hill, Hyde Park & Kensington
Notting Hill & Portobello Road
Wander the pastel-colored streets of Notting Hill. Portobello Road Market is best on Saturdays (this is a Wednesday, so it'll be quieter but still charming). Browse antique shops, vintage clothing, and the iconic bookshops.
Churchill Arms Pub Photo Stop
Even if you don't go in (yet), snap a photo of this incredibly flower-covered pub — it's draped in blossoms, especially gorgeous in April.
Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens
Walk through Hyde Park — it's magnificent in spring. See the Serpentine, the Diana Memorial Fountain, and Kensington Palace (where William and Kate live). April means blooming flowers everywhere.
V&A Museum or Natural History Museum
Both are free and spectacular. V&A for art, fashion, and design (the Medieval & Renaissance galleries are jaw-dropping). Natural History Museum for the iconic Hintze Hall with the blue whale skeleton.
Chelsea & King's Road Stroll
Walk south through Kensington into Chelsea. King's Road has great shops, and the Saatchi Gallery (free) is worth a look if there's a good exhibition on.
Churchill Arms for a Pint
Circle back to the Churchill Arms — step inside for a proper pint in one of London's most atmospheric pubs. The back room is a full Thai restaurant (surprisingly great). The front bar is pure old-school London.
Greenwich & Farewell London
DLR to Greenwich
Take the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) from central London — sit at the front for driver's-eye views through Canary Wharf. Or take the Thames Clipper river bus for a scenic ride.
Cutty Sark & Greenwich Market
Start at the Cutty Sark — the famous tea clipper ship is beautifully restored. Then walk through Greenwich Market for coffee and browsing.
Royal Observatory & Prime Meridian
Climb the hill through Greenwich Park to the Royal Observatory. Stand with one foot in each hemisphere at the Prime Meridian Line. The views from the hilltop over the Thames, Queen's House, and Canary Wharf are iconic.
Greenwich Park
Spread out on the grass and enjoy the view. In April, the park is full of cherry blossoms and spring flowers. A perfect peaceful moment before heading back to the city.
Farewell Drinks on the South Bank
Head back to central London for a final evening. Walk along the South Bank as the sun sets — the Thames path from Waterloo to Blackfriars is magical at golden hour.
Final Thames Walk
One last stroll along the river. The South Bank at night — St Paul's lit up across the water, the Shard gleaming, Tower Bridge glowing — is London at its most beautiful. Soak it in.
