โก Before You Go โ Essentials for Groups
Rent 4x4s or ATVs
Nosara's roads are unpaved and spread out. For a group of 5+, rent two 4x4 SUVs (~$70โ90/day each) or grab ATVs from Coconut Riders (~$60/day). You'll need your own wheels โ Uber doesn't exist here.
Cash is King
Many spots are cash-only (colones preferred, USD accepted at tourist spots). There's a BCR ATM in the village and one near Guiones โ withdraw early, they run out on weekends.
February = Perfect
Peak dry season. Sunny every day, 30โ33ยฐC (86โ91ยฐF), zero rain, warm 27ยฐC ocean water. No wetsuit needed. Best surf conditions of the year.
Book Group Activities Ahead
February is high season. Book surf lessons, horseback tours, and restaurant reservations at least a week in advance for groups of 5+. WhatsApp is how everything is booked locally.
Arrive, Surf & Sunset Feast
Land in Liberia, cruise to Nosara, hit the waves, and kick off the trip with a legendary sunset dinner on the cliffs. The crew energy starts here.
Land at Liberia & Drive to Nosara
Fly into Liberia (LIR) โ it's a scenic 2.5-hour drive south through Nicoya Peninsula. Pick up your rental 4x4s at the airport (book Vamos Rent-A-Car or Adobe โ they're reliable and have the real 4x4s you'll need). The drive is gorgeous: rolling hills, roadside fruit stands, howler monkeys in the trees. Once in Nosara, check into your accommodation and grab a quick bite.
Group Surf Lesson at Playa Guiones
Playa Guiones is a 7km white-sand beach with consistent, forgiving waves โ arguably the best learn-to-surf beach in Central America. The sandy bottom means soft wipeouts, and February brings clean 3โ5 foot swells. Book a group lesson with Safari Surf School or Nosara Surf Academy โ they handle groups of 5+ easily and the shared stoke of everyone catching their first wave together is unbeatable.
La Luna Bar & Grill at Playa Pelada
This is the move for night one. Drive 5 minutes to Playa Pelada โ Nosara's smaller, rockier sunset beach โ and grab a table at La Luna, perched right on the cliffs. The views are staggering: the Pacific stretching to infinity, the sky turning electric orange. Order rounds of guaro sours (Costa Rica's national spirit), fresh ceviche, and grilled mahi-mahi. Big tables on the terrace seat groups easily. Get there by 4:30pm to snag a prime spot.
Jungle Adventures, Yoga & Beach Bar Night
Your full day in paradise โ split the group for morning adventures (surf vs. yoga vs. jungle), reconvene for a long lunch, then close it out at Nosara's best beach bars.
Option A: Horseback Riding Through the Jungle
Book the morning ride with Boca Nosara Tours โ a 2.5-hour horseback tour that winds through dense jungle, crosses a river, and emerges onto a deserted stretch of beach. No experience needed. The horses are calm and the views are cinematic. Perfect for the non-surfers in the group.
Option B: Dawn Patrol Surf at Guiones
For the surfers in the crew โ wake up at 5:30am and paddle out for dawn patrol. The morning glass-off at Guiones is magical: empty lineup, warm water, sunrise over the jungle behind you. Rent boards from the beach shacks ($15โ20/day) or use your boards from yesterday's lesson.
Option C: Yoga at Bodhi Tree
The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort hosts drop-in classes in a stunning open-air shala overlooking the jungle canopy. The morning vinyasa flow is a near-spiritual experience โ howler monkeys provide the soundtrack. Great option for anyone who wants a mellower morning.
Extended Lunch at Organico
The whole crew reconvenes at Organico, Nosara's beloved organic market and cafรฉ. This is the social hub of town โ communal tables, incredible Buddha bowls, fresh juices, and the best smoothies you've ever had. Browse their shop for local chocolate, kombucha, and natural products. Then walk over to Playa Guiones for a lazy group beach session โ bodysurf, toss a frisbee, nap in the sand.
Dinner at Il Basilico, Then Kaya Sol
Tonight is the splurge night. Il Basilico is Nosara's best upscale restaurant โ an open-air Italian spot in the jungle with fairy lights, candles, and handmade pasta that'll ruin Italian food for you forever. The lobster linguine and fresh tuna tartare are outstanding. Book a big table in advance โ this place fills up in February.
After dinner, walk over to Kaya Sol for the nightlife scene. It's an open-air surf bar with communal tables, craft beer from Treintaycinco Brewing, and DJs or live music depending on the night. This is where Nosara's social energy concentrates after dark.
Dawn Patrol & Farewell Brunch
Your last morning โ one final sunrise surf, a long group brunch, tide pools at Pelada, and the drive back with sandy feet and full hearts.
One Last Ride at Guiones
Set the alarm for 5:30am โ the whole crew paddles out for dawn patrol. The sunrise over the jungle, the empty lineup, the warm water, the dolphins that sometimes cruise by at dawn. This is the memory that'll have everyone texting "when are we going back?" for months. Even the non-surfers should come down to the beach to watch โ it's that beautiful.
After surfing, anyone who wants a mellower last morning can walk to Playa Pelada's north end at low tide. The rocky outcrops reveal incredible tide pools full of sea stars, crabs, and small fish. There's a blowhole in the rocks that shoots spray 20 feet high when the swell is right.
Group Brunch at Al Chile Viola
The crew's final meal together. Al Chile Viola is a lively beachside spot with big tables, great ceviche, fish burritos with mango salsa, and killer margaritas. Order a round of micheladas, swap stories from the trip, and toast to Nosara. This is the restaurant with the best group energy โ terrace seating, good music, and the kind of vibe that makes saying goodbye hard.
Drive to Liberia Airport
Allow 3 hours for the drive back to Liberia (LIR). The road out of Nosara is unpaved for the first 30 minutes and can be slow behind trucks. Stop in the town of Nicoya for a quick casado at a local soda if you're hungry. Drop your rentals, check in, and start the group chat about next year's trip.

๐ Pro Tips & Practical Info
๐ Getting Around as a Group
- โข Two 4x4 SUVs is the sweet spot for 5โ8 people. Split gas and rental costs. Regular sedans will NOT survive Nosara's roads.
- โข ATVs are more fun but only fit 1โ2 people. Great if part of the crew wants independence.
- โข Uber doesn't exist. Some taxis operate but they're unreliable. Your own wheels are essential.
- โข Walking works within Guiones beach area. Village to beach is ~15 min by car.
๐ฐ Money Tips
- โข Colones (โก) is the local currency. $1 USD โ โก530. Tourist spots accept USD but give bad exchange rates.
- โข ATMs: BCR in the village, one near Guiones. Have multiple people withdraw โ they run out on weekends.
- โข Tipping: 10% service charge usually included. Extra tip appreciated but not expected.
- โข Group hack: Designate one person as the "bank" โ withdraw in bulk, Venmo/Zelle everyone later. Way less ATM fees.
๐ก๏ธ February Weather
- โข Peak dry season. Sunny every day, 30โ33ยฐC (86โ91ยฐF). Zero rain expected.
- โข Water temperature: 27ยฐC (80ยฐF) โ boardshorts/bikini only, no wetsuit.
- โข UV is extreme โ reef-safe sunscreen required by law. Reapply every 2 hours. Rash guards highly recommended.
๐ฑ Connectivity & Coordination
- โข Buy a Kolbi SIM at Liberia airport for ~$10 with data. Works well in Nosara.
- โข WhatsApp is how everything works โ tours, restaurants, even rentals. Have it installed.
- โข WiFi at most restaurants and hotels, but it's Costa Rica โ expect occasional drops.
- โข Create a WhatsApp group for the trip โ essential for coordinating split activities and meeting points.
๐ Packing Essentials
- โข Reef-safe sunscreen (required by law), rash guard, insect repellent
- โข Water shoes (for rocky Pelada tide pools), headlamp (roads are dark at night)
- โข Waterproof phone pouch โ you'll be in/near water constantly
