Public hospitals in Zagreb, Split, and Rijeka provide good care. Smaller coastal and island facilities have limited capacity during tourist season; serious cases may be transferred to the mainland.
Insurance: Travel insurance is strongly recommended for non-EU visitors. EU citizens should carry a valid EHIC or GHIC card but supplementary insurance for repatriation is still advisable.
π Medication Restrictions
Croatia, as an EU member state, follows Schengen medication import rules. Non-EU travelers may bring up to 3 months' personal supply of prescribed medications in original packaging with a doctor's certificate. For narcotic and psychotropic substances, a Schengen certificate validated by your national health authority is required. Croatia strictly enforces drug laws β carrying undocumented controlled substances can lead to criminal prosecution.
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β RESTRICTED: Prescription required. EU/EEA travelers should carry Schengen certificate. Non-EU: doctor's letter and original packaging.
- Adderall / amphetamines β RESTRICTED: Controlled substance. Requires Schengen certificate (EU/EEA) or doctor's letter (non-EU). Max 30-day supply.
- Cannabis / CBD β BANNED: Cannabis is illegal. CBD products with negligible THC are tolerated but in a legal gray area. Do not bring cannabis products.
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β RESTRICTED: Controlled substance. Schengen certificate or doctor's letter required.
- Codeine / opioids β RESTRICTED: Prescription required. Carry Schengen certificate or doctor's letter and original packaging.
