Nairobi Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi provide good care. Outside Nairobi and Mombasa, medical facilities are basic. Flying doctor services (AMREF) are available for safari emergencies.
Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is absolutely essential. Air evacuation from safari areas or to South Africa/Europe for serious conditions can cost $50,000+.

Kenya imposes severe penalties for drug offences β up to 10 years for possession and life imprisonment for trafficking. Carry all prescription medications in original packaging with a valid prescription and doctor's letter. Declare controlled substances at customs upon arrival.
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β RESTRICTED: Part II of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act; prescription required. Carry doctor's letter for import
- Adderall / amphetamines β BANNED: Amphetamines are prohibited under Kenya's NDPS Act; Adderall is not available and importation is illegal
- Cannabis / CBD β BANNED: Cannabis (bhang) is illegal under NDPS Act despite cultural use; CBD products are also prohibited
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β RESTRICTED: Controlled psychotropic substance; available by prescription in Kenya. Travelers should carry prescription documentation
- Codeine / opioids β RESTRICTED: Codeine is controlled; available in low-dose OTC cough syrups but pure codeine needs prescription. Carry documentation for import
