πŸ₯ Healthcare Summary

Adequate quality

Nairobi Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi provide good care. Outside Nairobi and Mombasa, medical facilities are basic. Flying doctor services (AMREF) are available for safari emergencies.

Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is absolutely essential. Air evacuation from safari areas or to South Africa/Europe for serious conditions can cost $50,000+.

πŸ’Š Medication Restrictions

Kenya imposes severe penalties for drug offences β€” up to 10 years for possession and life imprisonment for trafficking. Carry all prescription medications in original packaging with a valid prescription and doctor's letter. Declare controlled substances at customs upon arrival.

  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β€” RESTRICTED: Part II of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act; prescription required. Carry doctor's letter for import
  • Adderall / amphetamines β€” BANNED: Amphetamines are prohibited under Kenya's NDPS Act; Adderall is not available and importation is illegal
  • Cannabis / CBD β€” BANNED: Cannabis (bhang) is illegal under NDPS Act despite cultural use; CBD products are also prohibited
  • Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β€” RESTRICTED: Controlled psychotropic substance; available by prescription in Kenya. Travelers should carry prescription documentation
  • Codeine / opioids β€” RESTRICTED: Codeine is controlled; available in low-dose OTC cough syrups but pure codeine needs prescription. Carry documentation for import

πŸ™ Cultural Tips

Tipping: 10% at restaurants. Safari guides/drivers: $15-25/day per person. Hotel porters: KES 200-500.

Cultural taboos to avoid:

  • Photographing people without asking (especially Maasai β€” negotiate a fee)
  • Pointing at wildlife during safari (use open hand)
  • Disrespecting the flag or national symbols
  • Public intoxication
  • Same-sex public displays of affection (illegal)
