Private hospitals (Netcare, Mediclinic, Life Healthcare) provide excellent care comparable to Western standards. Public hospitals vary widely in quality and are often understaffed. Major cities have well-equipped private facilities.

Insurance: Travel insurance with comprehensive medical coverage is strongly recommended. Ensure your policy includes medical evacuation coverage, particularly if visiting remote safari areas far from major hospitals.

💊 Medication Restrictions

South Africa requires a local doctor's prescription ('script') for most prescription medications — carry a letter from your home doctor and original packaging to facilitate this. Personal cannabis consumption is legal, but all other drug possession, use, or smuggling carries severe penalties including long jail sentences. Airports use advanced detection technology on all luggage including transit passengers. Counterfeit medications can be a risk; use established pharmacy chains.

• Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) — RESTRICTED: Schedule 5 medicines under the Medicines Act. Prescription required. Travelers may bring personal supply with valid prescription and doctor's letter.
• Adderall / amphetamines — BANNED: Amphetamines are Schedule 7 (prohibited) substances. Adderall is not approved in South Africa. Importing requires special authorization which is generally not granted for personal use.
• Cannabis / CBD — CAUTION: Private personal use of cannabis was decriminalized by the Constitutional Court in 2018. CBD products with <0.001% THC are legal. However, public use, sale, and transport remain illegal. Travelers should not bring cannabis into the country.
• Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) — RESTRICTED: Schedule 6 controlled substance. Available by prescription in South Africa. Travelers should carry prescription and original packaging.
• Codeine / opioids — RESTRICTED: Low-dose codeine combinations were reclassified to prescription-only (Schedule 3+) in 2016 to address abuse. Stronger opioids are Schedule 6. Carry prescription documentation.
