Private hospitals in Colombo offer reasonable standards with English-speaking doctors. Outside major cities, medical facilities are basic, and rural areas may lack reliable emergency services.
Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended, as serious conditions may require transfer to Singapore or India for specialist treatment.
π Medication Restrictions
Sri Lanka has severe penalties for drug offences including lengthy prison sentences. Carry all prescription medications in original packaging with a valid prescription and doctor's letter. Airports use technology to detect illegal items including in transit baggage. Always carry your passport as identification.
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β RESTRICTED: Prescription controlled drugs under Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance; carry prescription for import
- Adderall / amphetamines β BANNED: Amphetamines are prohibited dangerous drugs in Sri Lanka; Adderall is not available. Severe penalties for possession
- Cannabis / CBD β BANNED: Cannabis is illegal under the Poisons Ordinance; CBD products are also prohibited. Strict enforcement
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β RESTRICTED: Controlled psychotropic; limited availability in Sri Lanka. Import with prescription and doctor's certificate
- Codeine / opioids β RESTRICTED: Codeine is controlled under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance; prescription required. Carry doctor's letter and keep in original packaging

Tipping: 10% at restaurants if no service charge. Tip drivers LKR 500-1000/day, guides LKR 1000-2000/day.
