🏥 Healthcare Summary
Budapest has several good hospitals and private clinics catering to international patients. Outside the capital, hospital quality varies and English-speaking staff may be limited.
Insurance: Travel insurance is highly recommended for non-EU visitors. EU citizens should carry EHIC/GHIC but additional insurance covering repatriation and private care is advisable due to variable public hospital quality.
💊 Medication Restrictions
Hungary follows EU Schengen medication import rules. Non-EU travelers may bring up to 3 months' supply of prescribed medications for personal use in original packaging with a doctor's prescription. For controlled substances (opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines), a Schengen certificate signed by your doctor and validated by your national health authority is required. Hungary has strict drug laws — unauthorized possession of controlled substances carries criminal penalties including imprisonment.
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) — RESTRICTED: Prescription required. EU/EEA travelers should carry Schengen certificate. Non-EU: doctor's letter and original packaging.
- Adderall / amphetamines — RESTRICTED: Controlled substance. Requires Schengen certificate (EU/EEA) or doctor's letter (non-EU). Max 30-day supply. Hungary has strict drug laws.
- Cannabis / CBD — BANNED: All cannabis products including CBD are illegal in Hungary. Zero tolerance policy. Even small amounts can lead to criminal prosecution.
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) — RESTRICTED: Controlled substance. Schengen certificate or doctor's letter required. Max 30-day supply.
- Codeine / opioids — RESTRICTED: Prescription required. Carry Schengen certificate or doctor's letter and original packaging.
🙏 Cultural Tips

- Clinking beer glasses (relates to 1848 Austrian celebration — some Hungarians still observe this)
- Confusing Hungary with other Eastern European countries
- Whistling indoors (considered bad luck)
- Not taking off shoes when entering someone's home
- Being late without notice
