πŸ₯ Healthcare Summary

Poor quality

Public hospitals are under-resourced with frequent shortages of supplies and medication. Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam is the best private option, but facilities outside major cities are very basic.

Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation coverage is absolutely essential. Ensure your policy covers emergency air evacuation, as serious injuries or illnesses will likely require transfer abroad.

πŸ’Š Medication Restrictions

Tanzania has strict drug laws β€” penalties for possession or supply of any illegal drugs, including cannabis, include lengthy prison sentences, even for small amounts or transit passengers. Carry all prescription medications in original packaging with a doctor's letter. Medical facilities are limited outside Dar es Salaam, so bring adequate supplies of any essential medications for your entire trip.

  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β€” RESTRICTED: Controlled under the Drugs and Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Drugs Act. Available by prescription. Travelers should carry a doctor's letter and keep medications in original packaging.
  • Adderall / amphetamines β€” BANNED: Amphetamines are prohibited narcotics. Adderall is not available or recognized. Importing carries severe criminal penalties under Tanzanian drug laws.
  • Cannabis / CBD β€” BANNED: Cannabis is illegal under Tanzanian law. Possession, use, and trafficking carry heavy penalties including imprisonment. CBD products are not distinguished from cannabis legally.
  • Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β€” RESTRICTED: Controlled psychotropic substance. May be difficult to obtain locally. Travelers should bring sufficient personal supply with prescription documentation and doctor's letter.
  • Codeine / opioids β€” RESTRICTED: Codeine-containing products require a prescription. Stronger opioids are tightly controlled. Carry a prescription and doctor's letter. Keep in original packaging.
