π Medication Restrictions
The UK allows travelers to bring up to 3 months' supply of most prescription medications for personal use in original packaging with a doctor's letter. For controlled drugs (Schedule 2-5 under the Misuse of Drugs Act), you must carry a letter from your prescribing doctor stating the drug name, dosage, and your name. For stays over 3 months or for Schedule 2 controlled drugs exceeding 3 months' supply, a Home Office personal license is required. Cannabis-derived products (including some CBD oils) remain controlled.
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium) β RESTRICTED: Class C controlled drugs (Schedule 4) under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Prescription-only (POM). Travelers may bring up to 3 months' supply with a doctor's letter. Alprazolam (Xanax) is rarely prescribed in the UK and may attract extra scrutiny.
- Adderall / amphetamines β RESTRICTED: Amphetamines are Class B controlled drugs (Schedule 2). Adderall is not licensed in the UK; lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse) is standard. Travelers must carry a doctor's letter and original packaging. Home Office license technically required for Schedule 2 drugs but personal medical supply with documentation is generally accepted.
- Cannabis / CBD β RESTRICTED: Cannabis is Class B. Medical cannabis was legalized in Nov 2018 via specialist prescription but access remains limited. CBD products are legal if they contain <1mg THC per container (Novel Food regulated). Do not import cannabis flower or non-compliant CBD products.
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) β RESTRICTED: Class B controlled drug (Schedule 2). Available on NHS prescription. Travelers should carry original packaging and doctor's letter. Reasonable personal supply (up to 3 months) accepted.
- Codeine / opioids β RESTRICTED: Low-dose codeine (co-codamol, co-codaprin) available OTC in pharmacies. Stronger formulations and other opioids are POM. Class B (Schedule 2 for stronger opioids). Carry documentation for prescription opioids.
